The team and its star player struck a six-year, $108 million contract extension Friday $55 million is guaranteed that answers any questions as to whether the franchise would stick behind its much-scrutinized signal caller. “Absolutely, we feel that we can win a championship with Tony,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told USA TODAY Sports, while also confirming details of the contract, which takes effect in 2014 and is scheduled to run through 2019. “We wouldn’t be doing all of this if we didn’t think we could win with him.” Romo, who will turn 33 next month, received a $25 million signing bonus. Set to earn a base salary of $11.5 million for 2013, Romo was scheduled to carry a $16.8 million salary cap number for this year. But the re-worked contract lowered his cap number for the upcoming season by $5 million. “Tony has always considered himself a Cowboy for life,” Romo’s agent, R.J. Gonser, told USA TODAY Sports. “Now it’s a reality.” And at a high price. The wow factor with Romo’s megapact the new money averages $18 million per year compared to an $11.25 million average salary in the previous contract is that the guaranteed portion exceeds the $52 million in guarantees that Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco secured from the Baltimore Ravens with his six-year, $120.6 million record contract earlier this month.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett told a local radio station Friday that his starting quarterback is likely to stay in bubble wrap in Canton, Ohio. “It’s one of those deals where I suppose he could play five plays or whatever, but we might lean to no plays,” Garrett told KRLD-FM. “But the clock starts on our ‘1’s’ in Week 2 of the preseason. So (Week 1 is) not going to be Tony’s game.” The Cowboys have the benefit (if you see it that way) of playing five preseason contests, meaning Romo has plenty of time to develop chemistry with his targets. He has been full-go in training camp and looked sharp Friday , completing 21 of 32 passes in 7-on-7 drills, per ESPNDallas.com.

The quarterback, the focus of great expectations by owner Jerry Jones , underwent minor surgery last month in which a cyst was removed from his back. He believes that hell be ready for minicamp next month and hes certain hell be ready for training camp and the regular-season opener. If this was the regular season and I had to play next week, I could, Romo said ( via the Dallas Morning News David Moore). This is just about being smart.Thats why I did it now. This will have no effect on training camp. No way will it have an impact. And I still think theres a good chance Im on the field for mini-camp. Tony Romo expects to be ready for training camp and the regular-season opener. (Tony Gutierrez / AP) Romo is expected to address the media today, marking his first public comments since becoming the highest-paid player in Cowboys history with a six-year, $108-million contract extension. Getting rid of the expectations that come with that contract might not be as easily dispatched as that cyst, which was removed in an outpatient procedure just before the NFL draft. It was a pretty routine afternoon, Romo said of the procedure.

“Saying that, I still want to play every time I suit up. Every time I step out there — your juices are flowing and you want to compete. From that perspective, yeah, but whatever the coaches want.” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Saturday that no official discussions regarding playing time for any of the regulars have happened, and a final decision would be made this week. Romo played one series (13 plays) in the 2010 Hall of Fame Game against Cincinnati. Romo did not take any snaps in the offseason because of surgery to remove a cyst from his back in April. He was only cleared for full action in mid-June. The Cowboys are monitoring his throws in practice, but Romo has not missed a day of work and said his back is fine. “It would be the same if you asked me if there was soreness in my legs,” Romo said when asked if his back was sore. “It’s just part of being in camp.”

Jason Garrett: Tony Romo unlikely to play in HOF Game

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is getting fried by TV/media critics for his two late-game turnovers against the New York Jets Sunday night. To rub salt in the wound, Romo’s history of 4th quarter collapses are being compared to that of LeBron James. During NBC’s telecast of Cowboys-Jets, the network’s Cris Collinsworth and Tony Dungy were merciless on Romo who played well for most of the game. “Tony Romo told us repeatedly that he cannot make the big mistakes,” said Collinsworth. “And they were his mistakes coming down the stretch — the fumble, the interception — that really turned the tide.” Dungy said there was “no excuse” for Romo throwing a killer pick to a covered Dez Bryant. “You have to throw the ball away.” On Monday, the Romo haters were out in full force on TV and the Internet where his name was trending all over Twitter. Romo keeps making “the same killer mistakes,” said Jemele Hill on ESPN2’s First Take. Like Dungy, Jon Ritchie of ESPN blasted Romo’s 4th-quarter pick to “walking” Bryant. He noted Romo is 1-6 in his last 7 games; 1-3 in the NFL playoffs. “It’s always something with Tony Romo.” ESPN’s Jim Rome tweeted: “The Cowboys will never get where they need to go until Tony Romo stops being Tony Romo.” And Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network tweeted: “Just filed my Week One column for NFL.com touching on all the really good, the really bad- Cam Newton–really good, Tony Romo really bad.” Then there were the comparisons to the Frozen One’s 4th-quarter disappearing act for the Miami Heat against the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals.

Backup Kyle Orton won six of his last 27 starts in Denver before he was benched for Tim Tebow in 2011. Dallas only had $51,005 of cap room before Romos new deal. The contract gives the Cowboys $5 million of much needed cap relief immediately by lowering Romos 2013 cap number from his $16,818,835 to $11,818,835. Addressing Romos contract situation should have been one of the Cowboys first offseason moves considering the severe cap problems theyve been facing. Dallas restructured multiple contracts in order to be compliant with the cap on March 12 when the 2013 league year started. Better timing with Romos deal could have given the Cowboys more flexibility regarding restructuring contracts and the option to enter the free agent market sooner. Dallas was the next to last team to sign a player in free agency. The Cowboys cap issues practically ensure that Romos contract will be restructured after the 2013 season. Dallas already has $145.9 million of cap obligations in 2014 while his $21.773 million 2014 cap number is the NFLs highest next year.

Tony Romo Contract: Inside Cowboys QB’s New Deal

Defensive tackle Jay Ratliff (hamstring) has yet to practice. Defensive end Anthony Spencer may not play in any pre-season games as he recovers from a scope on his left knee. But the most devastating blow is the loss of Crawford for the season with a torn Achilles. Crawford gave the group depth and flexibility. He was going to be the first replacement at end. He was going to help inside when Ratliff came out. Hes the teams insurance policy going forward if they are unable to sign Spencer or decide Ratliffs decline is irreversible and decide to part ways with the former Pro Bowl tackle. Crawfords injury has opened the door for Ben Bass to contribute, and hes responded so far. Kyle Wilber, struggling to make the transition from outside linebacker in a 3-4 to defensive end in this scheme, is starting to come on. Hes done a heck of a lot better in the last 48 hours coming off the football, head coach Jason Garrett said of last years fourth round pick out of Wake Forest.

That is a bold, but possible statement. Super Bowl teams have things go their way. That Week 6 loss for the Cowboys was a Week 6 win for the Baltimore Ravens . The Ravens were also on the right side of games with a last second one-point win over the Patriots , a three-point win over the Steelers , an overtime win over the Chargers and the double-overtime thriller in the playoffs against the Broncos . The Ravens had everything go their way. The Ravens also were aided by a championship-caliber defense. Imagine if Romo was the quarterback of that team? Would he have won a Super Bowl instead of Flacco? Now in 2013, the defense will be better for Romo’s Cowboys. The team is making the switch to the 4-3, a formation that will be key to the success this season. DeMarcus Ware will have his best year yet and will thrive in the new formation.

and are already scrambling to find bodies for the defensive line. One of their new bodies looks good in fourth-year veteran defensive end George Selvie . At 6’4” and 270 pounds, Selvie has the classic build of a true 4-3 defensive end. What he does not have is a strong resume at the pro level. He was a seventh-round draft pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2010, and Dallas becomes the fifth team that he has played for. This doesn’t make Cowboys fans jump too high with expectations, but the devil is in the details. Selvie had a modest rookie season with the Rams while playing in all 16 games and picking up 1.5 sacksnothing to write home about but far from invisible. He also amassed 21 tackles during that freshman campaign.

His most important preseason game is the fourth one this year – Aug. 24 against Cincinnati. But Romo just signed the richest contract in franchise history – six years, $108 million with $55 million guaranteed, or $3 million more than Super Bowl winner Joe Flacco got from Baltimore. And Romo didn’t take a real snap the entire offseason after having a cyst removed from his back. Thus the varying questions for Garrett on what he hopes to get out of the preseason and how many games are ideal for the starters. “The balance is to get your team ready, your starters ready, evaluate your young guys – that’s a really important thing so you cut your team down the right way. And obviously avoiding injuries is an important part of the preseason.” Health isn’t an issue for Romo, who didn’t talk to reporters while leaving the field after Saturday’s early practice. Garrett has acknowledged that Romo “wasn’t quite himself” when training camp opened a week ago, but said the quarterback has progressed well. “You know, he hasn’t been in this environment in a little while,” Garrett said recently.

If Cowboys improve, Jerry might admit mistake

Are they on the way to success with this combination, or have we over-estimated the abilities of this trio? I think we’ll know for sure after this season. Brandon Carr was brought in during free agency before the 2012 season. At that point, he was considered the best free agent corner on the market, along with Cortland Finnegan. The Cowboys paid big for him, a five-year deal worth $50.1 million. Morris Claiborne was picked 6th overall in 2012 draft. He had high expectations placed on him; he was the player the Cowboys decided was the best defensive player in that draft. Many others agreed. But, cornerbacks in their rookie season tend to struggle. Orlando Scandrick was drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 draft and has settled in nicely as the Cowboys nickel back who has filled in as a starter when injuries occur. How did this trio do in 2012?

“Wilcox tackles way too much in practice,” Check My Site Garrett says. “And you kind of coach both sides of it: ‘Hey, keep doing that, but don’t do that.’ You know what I’m saying?” Wilcox says he isn’t overcompensating because he comes from the Football Championship Subdivision, a level below the top tier of college football. Dallas coach Jason Garrett has diagnosed the rookie from Georgia Southern with Bill Bates syndrome, remembering how his former teammate would apologize for putting players on the ground in non-tackling situations and then pick them up and do it the next play. Its a tricky balance for coaches, particularly with a small school player who has just a year of college experience at safety and is trying to leave an impression. Wilcox tackles way too much in practice, Garrett says. And you kind of coach both sides of it: Hey, keep doing that, but dont do that. You know what Im saying? The answer is, if it works and we break out of this 8-8 cycle on a positive basis, then I will wish that wed have done it a couple of years earlier, Jones said. Jones realized after consecutive 8-8 seasons in Garretts first two full years as a head coach that his long-held belief that a head coach should have play-calling duties needed to be reconsidered. Suddenly, Jones decided that employing a walkaround head coach wasnt such a bad idea. Jimmy Johnson, the most successful Cowboys head coach in Jones tenure, tried convincing Jones and Garrett into delegating play-calling duties after Garretts promotion. However, Jones valued former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs opinion over Johnsons. I felt that when he did become the head coach, the head coach being the coordinator on one side of the ball or the other [was best for the team], Jones said. And Ive said that, and I got that really as much as anybody from Joe Gibbs. But weve got a game today that has expanded the scope of things to concentrate on. Its just more than it was in years past, and well benefit from that [change]. So, in hindsight, was Jones wrong? Not really, because he knew that part of it, Jones said. Thats the most comfortable he was in his shoes.

So the 83.1 yards per game he’s averaged as a starter is a decent enough figure, but it’s not enough to get him any further up this list until we see some sustained proof that things can get better. Can they? The Cowboys drafted Joseph Randle this year, and he’s a threat to take over if Murray gets hurt, just as Murray was a threat to Felix Jones in 2011. Murray has incentive to stay healthy, for sure. And the Cowboys are changing some things about the way they design and implement their offense this year, with quarterback Tony Romo being more involved during the week and offensive coordinator Bill Callahan taking over play-calling duties on game day. There’s also the chance of improved interior offensive line play with the help of first-round pick Travis Frederick , which would help Murray run better and possibly avoid injury. But in the end, the biggest questions aren’t about the Cowboys, but about Murray himself. He seems like a back who enjoys contact, and backs like that, while super-tough, tend not to last very long in the NFL. Murray was one of the guys on the film they showed us at the league meetings in the spring when they introduced the new rule about running backs leading with the crowns of their helmets in the open field. He’s an angry, aggressive runner who puts himself in position to get hurt.

See, Murray likes to patiently run along the line of scrimmage, pick his hole and then accelerate through it. Callahan prefers the scheme because it forces the defensive lineman to move sideways, making them easier to block. “In high school and college I was either in a one-back or shotgun, so I’m used to not having a fullback,” Murray said. “You don’t have to worry about reading the fullback or the hole getting clogged up. I just have to work on being more patient and giving the play time to develop. I watch a lot of tape of Frank Gore because he’s probably the most patient runner I’ve seen. He does a great job of setting up blocks and waiting for the hole to open.” The Cowboys need Murray to provide the consistent offensive balance this offense has lacked the past few seasons. No, DeMarco Murray . Although similarities between Murray and Peterson are only in their physical appearance and running styles, the Dallas Cowboys runner said the following, per Jon Machota of The Dallas Morning News , in response to a question about running for 2,000 yards in a season, something the reigning NFL MVP did in 2012. USA TODAY Sports “I think Im capable of anything.” While that’s far from an outright guarantee, Murray’s confident comment has made many think about the possibility of him becoming the eighth member of professional football’s mostprestigious running back club. Outside of tremendous natural ability, a multitude of things have to go right for a back to reach the 2,000-yard plateau, so let’s dive into Murray’s chances of achieving immortality. Murray’s History In order to run for 2,000 yards, a running back must average 125 yards per game over a full, 16-game regular season. As pointed out by ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio , Murray had single-game outputs of 253, 139, 135, and 131 yards all in his first nine contests as the Cowboys feature back. In his first 16 games as the main guy in Dallas, a period that spanned from the middle of 2011 through late in the 2012 campaign, Murray accumulated 1,371 yards, a respectable total but clearly well short of 2,000. Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports Actually, his last 100-yard performance came in the season-opener against the New York Giants a year ago. To put succinctly, Murray’s “first” nine games provided a glimpse of what the former Oklahoma Sooners star is capable of, but since then, he’s been average at best. Cowboys’ Offensive History With a 253-yard and three 130-plus-yard efforts, along with five games of 40 yards or less, Murray’s been the definition of “boom-or-bust” with the Cowboys. As it currently stands, Murray’s career yards-per-carry average is 4.8, which is .2 yards lower than Peterson’s (in 1,429 fewer carries). Take away the first five games of his NFL career, before he was the unquestioned starter in Dallas, and Murray’s yards-per-carry average is 4.95. His 25-carry, 253-yard breakout campaign is majorly responsible for his relatively high per-carry efficiency and overall yardage sum, but there have been four instances in which Murray averaged at least five yards per carry in a game when he was not given more than 14 carries. Also, Tony Romo ‘s presence mustn’t be ignored. Fully healthy a season ago, the polarizing quarterback threw the ball 648 times, which was the third-highest total in the NFL. Tom Pennington/Getty Images As a team, per ProFootballFocus (subscription required) the Cowboys ran 703 pass plays to only 355 on the ground, which equated to a run percentage of 33.55, a offensive tendency that doesn’t bode well for Murray’s 2,000-yard chances. To compare, the Minnesota Vikings ran 591 pass plays to 515 runs in 2012, a run percentage 46.5 percent. This chart illustrates how trulystark the contrast was: Not surprisingly, in Murray’s non-100 yard games, his cumulative yards-per-carry average dipped to 3.89, definitely not part of the recipe for a 2,000-yard masterpiece. Additionally, he only averages 82.6 yards per game in his 18 games as the “starter.” If Murray was given the 348 carries Peterson received in 2012, at the 4.95 yards-per-carry he averages in 18 games as the starter, he’d finish a full season with 1,722 yards. Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images Larry Johnson carried the ball a record 416 times in 2006, and ran for 1,789 yards. Therefore, Murray would have to be fed the ball a whopping 405 timesan attempt total which would be exceeded only by James Wilder in 1984, Jamal Anderson in 1998 and Larry Johnson in 2007to eclipse 2,000 yards. Actually, in the theoretical, absolute best-case scenario, extrapolating the 6.0 yard-per-carry average Murray had in his first nine games as the starter in Dallas, 334 carries would get him to 2,000. However, in an offense that appeared to be decidedly pass-predicated in 2012and forced to throw more when trailingit seems as though Murray would be lucky to get 300 carries, much less 400. Even 334 would be considered far fetched. Murray’s Injuries The Cowboys’ dedication to frequently passing the football isn’t the only part of history that suggests Murray would have an exceptionally difficult time reaching 2,000 yards in a season. The powerful runner has dealt with a variety of injuries early in his career. Tom Pennington/Getty Images Murray has appeared in 23 of a possible 32 games since joining the Cowboys in 2011, and he missed six games in 2012 with a nagging foot injury. While some firmly believe in the term “injury-prone,” injuries seem to be more random than anything else, so there’s no real way to predict if Murray can stay healthy or not.

When he gets the ball this year, it is expected to be in a one-back, two-tight end alignment since the team no longer has a fullback on the roster. “It’s something I’m looking forward to,” Murray said Sunday, July 21. “When you get guys spread out, its going to be hard for them to have seven or eight guys in the (box) so its going to open a lot of running lanes.” Fantasy Tip: Murray has always been a tremendous talent, but staying healthy has been what has held him back from becoming a fantasy superstar. He is the bona fide No. 1 in Dallas with no one of note pushing him, so he’ll see a lion’s share of the carries, and is therefore a tremendous late first-round pick on draft day. Just be sure to have plenty of depth due to his injury history. Access more DeMarco Murray news and rumors by clicking here …. What do you think? Sound off!

Adrian Peterson on Cowboys’ DeMarco Murray: ‘I know Dallas hasn’t seen the best out of him’

The biggest concern for Dallas is Murray staying healthy. Through his first two years, Murray has missed a total of nine games due to leg injuries. Its difficult to base an offensive scheme around a guy who isnt on the field consistently. Murrays incomplete 2012 campaign was the main reason the Cowboys finished 31st in rushing last season. The unit only averaged a miniscule 3.6 yards per carry. In order for Dallas to be more successful next year, Murray must be an integral part of its offense. Last season, Tony Romo passed the ball more than he ever had in his career. He threw 648 attempts, putting him just behind Drew Brees and Matthew Stafford . This didnt result in more points. To get the most production out of the offense, the Cowboys have to be more balanced. This responsibility falls on the shoulders of Murray and the play-calling of new offensive coordinator Bill Callahan.

DeMarco Murray: It’s not all on Romo

Tony Romo, DeMarco Murray

His name? He seems like a back who enjoys contact, and Demarco Murray Jersey Cheap backs like that, while super-tough, tend not to last very long in the NFL. Murray was one of the guys on the film they showed us at the league meetings in the spring when they introduced the new rule about running backs leading with the crowns of their helmets in the open field. He’s an angry, aggressive runner who puts himself in position to get hurt. It’s hard to imagine that changing, regardless of what changes on the Cowboys’ offense around him. My fantasy advice? I think Murray in the third round has a chance to be a nice value pick, especially if you’re thin at running back because you got shut out of the top guys and decided to go with a quarterback and/or receiver early.

Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray: ‘I’m going to play all 16’

Minnesota Vikings : ChristianPonder, quarterback Despite quarterbacking the Vikings to a surprising playoff appearance, Ponder enters the season under the microscope due to his inconsistent play under center. While Ponder completed 62.1 percent of his passes and put up a respectable 18:12 touchdown-to-interception ratio in 2012, the Vikings ‘ over-reliance on Adrian Peterson kept them from legitimately contending in the NFC. For Minnesota to take the next step, Ponder must become an effective playmaker in the passing game, capable of winning games on the strength of his right arm. With a few new weapons on the perimeter ( Greg Jennings and rookie Cordarrelle Patterson ), Ponder must step up his game this season. New Orleans Saints : MartezWilson, outside linebacker The Saints are shifting to a 3-4 defense under new coordinator Rob Ryan, making the outside linebackers the focal point of the pass rush. With Victor Butler sidelined by a torn ACL , Wilson will be relied on to deliver big results as a hybrid playmaker on the edge. The third-year pro flashed playmaking ability last season, collecting three sacks in limited action, and his combination of size and speed could make him a disruptive force in a blitz-happy scheme. Of course, Wilson hasn’t been named the official starter at outside linebacker, but the Saints undoubtedly are counting on him to make a significant contribution as a pass rusher off the edge. New York Giants : DavidWilson, running back Wilson might’ve ranked as the Giants ‘ most explosive playmaker in his rookie campaign, based on his remarkable production as a returner/change-of-pace back. The second-year pro averaged 26.9 yards per kick return while also producing five runs of 20-plus yards on just 71 rushing attempts.

Peterson said the two still keep in touch and he sees a bright future for Murray in the Cowboys backfield. MORE COWBOYS NEWS Breaking Down the Boys: Why the Cowboys offense can improve with one simple trick Hes a heck of an athlete, heck of a player and a better man off the field, Peterson said. I KNOW Dallas hasnt seen the best out of him. The moment he stepped on that campus, I knew if he stayed healthy he was going to be good. Thats the type of mentality he has. Youve seen that in Dallas. Hes so versatile with what he can do blocking, running the ball, catching the ball. Hes going to be a good player for the Cowboys. Murray and Peterson have both shown the ability to be physical runners who dont mind dishing out some punishment to opposing defenders. With that in mind, some might think the two running backs will have to change their style considering the NFLs new rule that will penalize ball carriers who deliver blows with the crown of their helmets. Does Peterson have plans to change his style of running?

Adrian Peterson on Cowboys’ DeMarco Murray: ‘Dallas hasn’t seen the best out of him’

“That’s something I can’t control. I can’t control if anything happens,” Murray said. “All I can do is go out there, play hard, play fast, play physical. Once I’m out there, I don’t think there’s any question about anything.” Murray produces when he’s on the field, the problem for Dallas is that he’s not on the field that often. The third-year back ran for 663 yards in 10 games last season, a number that projects out to 1,061 yards over a 16-game season. Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant has no problem with Murray sitting out an OTA or two, “The thing about it is, we’re in OTA’s and we don’t want to get him out there when he’s not ready and something come’s up,” Bryant said. “We need him throughout the whole year.” Tight end Jason Witten seems to feel the same way, “I think it’ll be huge for us,” Witten said about having Murray available. “He’s a guy that plays hard and runs hard. He’s a dynamic back who can create a lot of things for you.

Before the start of walk-through practices, Brown quizzes Murray on the playbook for a few minutes. Brown is also challenging Murray to stop looking to make big yards and just settle for whatever is there because something might open up down the line. “His motto is ugly money is good money,” Murray said of Brown. “Two yards is good, three yards is good, and you may get those three or five carries in a row.

DeMarco Murray expecting to have ‘great year’

He was a late first-round/early second-round pick a year ago. This year, he’s looking at middle of the third round. Why? Well, as you know, Murray’s had a bit of a tough time doing two very important things that a fantasy running back must do: Staying healthy and scoring touchdowns. The Cowboys have played 27 games since Murray became their starting running back in late October of 2011. Murray has missed nine of those 27 games because of leg injuries. He’s also scored a grand total of six touchdowns, never more than one in the same game. So the 83.1 yards per game he’s averaged as a starter is a decent enough figure, but it’s not enough to get him any further up this list until we see some sustained proof that things can get better. Can they?

Cowboys mailbag: The battle at linebacker

Romo spoke to reporters Sunday evening following the Cowboys first day of training camp, fielding questions as far-ranging as his health to his involvement in the teams play-calling. I feel good. Ive been throwing, Ive been running, Ive been doing all that stuff, Romo said. I was excited about getting out here honestly, just the smell of the grass and being out on the football field is a great feeling. You never want to take that for granted. Romo went through a full walkthrough and a two hour practice on Sunday in his first team activities since undergoing a micro procedure to remove a non-cancerous cyst in mid-April. The quarterback was present throughout the Cowboys offseason OTAs and minicamp, but was unable to participate until the start of training camp. You gain a great appreciation just watching and not being able to be out there with your teammates and go through the grind. So it was great today. It was a great start, he said. During the wait for training camp, Romo said he got the all-clear to begin throwing and working out about a month and a half ago. That includes running and throwing workouts, as well as the week-long mountain running excursion Romo took this summer, which team owner/general manager Jerry Jones alluded to last week. Sometimes I was a little too aggressive with the aspect of wanting to be aggressive to get back fast, he said.

Then again, his ultra-violent running style would lend credence to the idea that he may be more “prone” to injuries than other backs who avoid contact more often. And we can all agreeto get to 2,000 yards, Murrayhasto play in all 16 games. Conclusion From physical and athletic standpoints, Murray is, somewhat surprisingly, quite similar to Peterson, although AP, overall, is more of a freakish specimen. They’re comparable in size and stature, boast nearly identical timed speed, run with extreme urgency and rarely shy away from contact. Will DeMarco Murray near the 2,000-yard mark in 2012? “Im doing everything,” he said. “Full speed.” The trick will be keeping Murray 100 percent. Injury prone in college, he’s missed nine games over his first two NFL campaigns, and appeared sluggish after returning from a foot injury last season. Murray will be a high-risk, high-reward RB2. All things considered, this has been the 25-year-old’s healthiest offseason so far in the pros. Report: 49ers want to dump CB Carlos Rogers NFL reporter Jason Cole “keeps hearing” the 49ers “don’t want to keep” CB Carlos Rogers. Rogers was considered a potential cap casualty when the offseason began, but many figured he was a “lock” once $1.25 million of his $5.5 million salary became guaranteed on April 1. Following the acquisition of Eric Wright, all three of Rogers, Wright, and Nnamdi Asomugha will have to compete to keep roster spots. Despite the partial salary guarantee, the 49ers could create $4.99 million in cap space by cutting ties with Rogers.

Sorry. So basically your saying Romo plays all 22 positions for the team? Dont make such stupid comments. jaltreality says: Jul 10, 2013 2:59 PM Well, thats just the nature of the job. Fair or not, QBs get all the credit (see: Joe Flaccos post-Super Bowl contract), they get all the blame. grrsnronw says: Jul 10, 2013 3:06 PM Romo always gets the blame when the Cowboys dont win. Hell the defense couldnt stop a 5 year old from running on them or passing on them. The defense has been the problem for years in Dallas. Every since Bill Parcells wanted to switch to the 3-4 instead of keeping the 4-3 which Dallas had always run and won Super Bowls with. So I would like to know why is Romo always the blame sure he has made some bone head plays but every QB in the league has even the Manning Brothers hell Romo is better than Eli any day.

DeMarco Murray’s Comments on Tony Romo Proves Dallas Cowboys Teammates Believe in Him

Machota: Romo, Kaepernick, Wilson or Schaub? For this year alone, I’d pick…

Tony Romo Dallas Cowboys

Murraywas asked about the pressure of playing for the Dallas Cowboys and if Tony Romo deserved all the criticism thrown his way? I dont think its Tony Romo himself. We have to have guys on the outside stepping up, guys in the front five stepping up and guys in the backfield stepping up. Its not all on his head. He gets a lot of criticism, a lot of the blame. As individuals, we have a lot of talent and we have to make plays for him. No one can look at those comments and not know that Tony Romo has the complete backing from his teammates. Dont underestimate just how important that trust in Romo is because it is a huge deal for the Cowboys and its vital to their success. Its quite simple, if your teamdoesnt believe in their quarterback, they have no chance to win in the NFL . Tony Romos teammates believe in him and thats all that matters. Which means no matter what anyone says about Romo, no matter how negative people are towards the current quarterback of the Cowboys, it doesnt make a difference to Romo or the team. Ron Jaworski, or anyone else, can rank Tony Romo wherever they want on the list of quarterbacks; the bottom line is the Dallas Cowboys believe in Romo.

How valuable is Romo? Well, the Dallas Cowboys just deemed that he’s worth $108 million, Harrison wrote. And it’s no wonder why: Considering how poorly the offensive line and defense played last season, the ‘Boys should’ve considered themselves lucky to reach four wins, let alone eight. Critics hold Romo accountable as an individual, which is funny, because none of them want to hear his individual statistics. They don’t want to hear that he owns the fifth-highest passer rating in NFL history at 95.6. Or that analytics haven Pro Football Focus rated him as the 11th-best quarterback in football last season, 10th in 2011 and eighth in 2010. But what about that season finale against the Washington Redskins, where Romo threw three interceptions including the one to linebacker Rob Jackson that basically cost the Cowboys the division title and a playoff spot? Obviously, that pick emboldened the haters. It should be noted, however, that Peyton Manning’s back-breaking interception in the divisional round two weeks later was a far worse decision, Harrison wrote. Romo threw his ill-fated ball with a split-second to consider it. Manning rolled out, thought about what he was doing and tossed the ball across his body into coverage.

Tony Romo: I’ll be more involved in game-planning

“I think here going forward, Ill just be more involved in game-planning,” Romo told the newspaper. “There are certain things I really believe can help us that were going to do some of that. Its a collective group effort and I think were all going to go in there and go to work.” This isn’t a surprise because team owner/general manager Jerry Jones said early in the offseason he wanted Romo to have more of a say in the offense. Jones said he wanted coach Jason Garrett and now play caller Bill Callahan to run more plays where they can utilize the quarterbacks legs and abilities to move around the pocket. Romo’s role has changed over the years from a young quarterback asked to take over for a benched Drew Bledsoe , to a veteran who commands the respect of the locker room. “As quarterback, through the experiences youve had, you just understand what defenses are trying to do and you gain a very high understanding of football concepts and what you want to do,” Romo said in the interview. Romo underwent minor surgery to remove a cyst from his back this summer. The surgery prevented Romo from participating in offseason workouts but all indications are he should be ready for training camp because he’s thrown passes during walkthrough practices.

National writer: Cowboys’ Tony Romo is one of the most underrated players in the NFL

Kaepernick, Wilson, Schaub or Romo. Jon Machota: I’d take Romo. The other three are all very good but I’ve always thought Romo was better than Schaub. Kaepernick and Wilson have only showed what they can do over one season. Well, Kaepernick didn’t even have a full season. They both could have outstanding careers but I’ll take the more experienced player. Why would the Cowboys get rid of the only real FB on their roster? Jon Machota: Because they’re going to use more two TE sets. Not as much need for a fullback.

DeMarco Murray: I can have 2,000 yards for Cowboys

Murray dealt with a hamstring issue this spring, but he said he’s “100 percent” and will be “ready to go” for training camp this month. Murray’s inability to avoid injuries has led to questions if he can shoulder the load over a full season. But this is July, a time of eternal optimism in the NFL. During an appearance on the yellfest “First Take,” Murray was asked if he had the ability to run for 2,000 yards in a season. “I think I’m capable of anything,” Murray replied, via The Dallas Morning News . (Note: If Murray and Dez Bryant both go over 2,000 yards in 2013, how much pie will that leave for Miles Austin and Jason Witten ? We estimate a mid-sized crumb. Possibly two.) Murray then headed over to “SportsCenter,” on which he discussed his hopes that Dallas will increase its commitment to the run in 2013. “We definitely need to emphasize the running game,” Murray said.

DeMarco Murray says he’s capable of a 2,000-yard season

Smith brought up that point while Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray was on “First Take” Wednesday morning. Unlike Smith, Murray was laid back when responding. Smith wasn’t satisfied with several of Murray’s answers so the co-host continued to get louder. Murray never seemed fazed by Smith’s multiple attempts to get the third-year back to say something he might later regret. “The stats say we haven’t done those things you’ve said but all that matters is this year and right now,” Murray said. “We’re ready to take the next step and get things going.” In regards to the criticism that the Cowboys have received for going three consecutive seasons without a playoff berth, Murray said it’s something he understands but is not concerned with. The 25-year-old Las Vegas native said he’s only worried about the thoughts of the people within the organization. “We understand the expectations here in Dallas Cowboys Nation,” Murray said. “We have a lot of great players and we’re definitely ready to change some things around here. Roger Staubach: He led the Cowboys to two Super Bowl titles (and four Super Bowl appearances), won a Heisman Trophy and engineered some memorable comebacks. Staubach set the standard by which all quarterbacks of America’s Team are measured. Jerry Jones: Probably the most controversial of our choices, especially if you consider this club’s run of mediocrity since the mid 1990s. But do the Cowboys win three Super Bowls in the 1990s without Jones? He botched the handling of Landry’s firing, but he hired Jimmy Johnson as his replacement and watched the team transform back into a champion. He isn’t on here as a GM. He’s on this monument as an owner. Emmitt Smith : An argument could be made for any of the “Triplets” and maybe even more than one being on this Cowboys Rushmore. But we chose Smith, the NFL’s all-time leading rusher. The Cowboys’ ground game was nearly unstoppable during Smith’s prime and he was an iron man, playing through injuries and leading by example. Others considered (in no particular order): Troy Aikman : Won three Super Bowls and led the club’s productive offense.

Dallas Cowboys Releasing Lawrence Vickers Makes Sense for Team’s New Direction

Lawrence Vickers

Did anybody see the Cowboys play defense in 2012? And it wouldn’t take a comedian to suggest, quite simply, no. Yet there’s four players gaining recognition for rating among the nation’s best. That’s more than one-third of the Cowboys defense. And representing all three levels of the defense, too. Now for a disclaimer: these early watch lists are lengthy and often appear to be all-inclusive. Repeated revisions and cuts are coming before any ballots become relevant. Still, for a team with perceived problems when it comes to limiting yards or points, it’s more reason for increased optimism for a special season in 2013. The offense figures to be potent again, with essentially nine starters back on that side of the ball, plus several exciting new faces hoping to force their way on the field. And you’ll find some Cowboys in play when the watch lists for the Lombardi, Biletnikoff, Davey O’Brien, Doak Walker and Walter Camp awards are revealed this week.

On Friday, the Cowboys released the seven-year pro in a move that will save the team $1.2 million in cap space, which if not used is accredited to next years salary cap. The Cowboys said that they were moving in a different direction on offense and would rely more on two and three tight end sets, ultimately eliminating the need for a true fullback. When the Cowboys went out and signed tight endDante Rosario, the writing was on the wall for Vickers. The Cowboys will also be implementing a zone-run blocking scheme that, in my opinion, suitsDeMarco Murrays running stylebetter. DallasCowboys.com writer and former NFL scout Bryan Broaddusthinks that this new scheme will benefit Murray also. In watching OTA and mini-camp practices,Bill Callahanwas taking plenty of reps to run plays where the offense went without a full back, or when they needed one, it was Rosarioliningup in an offset formation and filling in that role, Broaddus said. It was more single back, zone runs. What I really like about this zone scheme, that Callahan is working with for this offense that it will play to the true strengths of Murray. Broaddusand I both think that Vickers release wont be such a big deal because of the direction in which the team is headed. It simply doesnt need a fullback.

15th Overall Ranking by Ron Jaworski on Tony Romo Too Low

Ron Jaworski: Cowboys’ Tony Romo 15th in QB rankings, capable of more

He is one of the most talentedthat cant be debatedbut his inconsistency and failure to come up big in the clutch are what cause him to slide in rankings. That part, I agree with Jaworski on. But 14 quarterbacks better than Romo? To me, that seems a little far fetched. You have the obvious elite group. Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning. Then you have guys like Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, Ben Roethisberger,Joe Flacco, Robert Demarco Murray Youth Jersey Griffin III, Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, Cam Newton and Phillip Riversall in no particular order. Those I would assume would be Jaworskis top 13. Then he probably would have Matt Stafford or Matt Schaub 14th, and then Romo. But when I look at that list, I dont see how you cant have Romo right in there amongst those names. Obviously, if youre ranking the best, you can go about it in two ways, ranking based on talent alone or winsencompassing Super Bowls, playoff wins and clutch performing.

Tony Romo Dallas Cowboys

Looking at the stats between 2009 and 2012, its interesting to see the differences between winning the division and falling out of the postseason. Its common for people to cite the offensive line as an area in need of improvement if Romo is going to get Dallas back to the promised land. However, the Cowboys line gave up 34 sacks and 78 hits in 2009, as opposed to 36 sacks and 75 hits in 2012 practically identical numbers. So Romo is used to that type of pressure and has made it work in the past though its hard to be effective when everyone knows youre one-dimensional. The running game was famously atrocious in 2012 31st in the NFL with 1,265 yards and eight rushing touchdowns. The 2009 offense ran for 2,103 yards seventh in the league and 14 touchdowns. The 2007 offense, which helped produce 13 wins, wasnt even that good, with 1,746 yards on the season. The difference is dependability, as the 2007 and 2009 offenses rushed the ball 419 times and 436 times, respectively. Last season the offense ran the ball just 355 times, which was second lowest in the league.

Tony Romo still on track for training camp

Dallas Cowboys v Washington Redskins

Ed Werder of ESPN reports that Romo remains on track to open up camp with his teammates when it opens on July 20. Per Werder, Romo has been rehabbing daily and throwing regularly to ensure hes able to make it onto the field right away. The big story about the Cowboys offense this offseason other than Romos surgery and contract extension has been the switch in play callers from head coach Jason Garrett to offensive coordinator Bill Callahan. While it was covered as a move of massive importance, its unclear how much impact that change will have but at least it doesnt seem like the Cowboys will have to worry about their quarterbacks health while figuring out how everything will work on offense this season. doomsdaydefensetx says: Jul 8, 2013 10:44 AM Tony is not the player Id be worried about showing up in camp. Not saying the QB is perfect, but the mechanics that caused the interceptions are the same that avoided 500 sacks. If you have to fight swords with clubs, you have to accept that the clubs will get cut or will break in the battle. Romo is one of the physically more talented players in the league, and has the arm that puts him as an elite arm as well. Give him a good organized OC and, as dirtydrynn says a running back, and Ill put money on them.

9) Will Romo Have to Carry the Offense Again in 2013?

I can tell you right now, every guy is behind Romo and every guy has his back, from the undrafted guys to the No. 1 starting tackles or anyone. Yeah, he signed a big contract. Its time for not only him but its time for us as a team to be cohesive and us as a team to win some games up there. The Cowboys have been criticized over the years for not having the leadership that previous Cowboys teams have had. Some dont believe Romo is a leader. Murray disagrees with those critics. During his time with Cowherd, Murray said Romo is definitely a leader and explained why. I see it every day, Murray said. I see it when no ones there at 8 a.m. and its him and I there working out. When its 5 oclock at night and its 120 degrees and hes outside running and trying to get better.

DeMarco Murray: No Dallas Cowboy resents Tony Romo for new contract; ‘Every guy has his back’

In the final minutes of a win-or-go-home game in Washington, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback made a poor throw to DeMarco Murray. It was intercepted and the Redskins held on to win the game, 28-18, and the NFC East. Largely because of plays like that, former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski says Romo isn’t a top 10 quarterback. Jaworski, an NFL analyst for ESPN, has been unveiling his quarterback rankings recently and on Monday explained why he has Romo at No. 15. “I have always liked Romo, but his play in the final regular season game of the 2012 season with the NFC East title on the line still bothers me,” Jaworski said. “You just can’t make mistakes, regardless of whose fault it is. “It was the fourth quarter interception with three-and-one-half minutes remaining and the Cowboys trailing by three. That I just can’t forget. You can’t make a throw with no definition in that particular situation, regardless of the pressure.
