Cowboys’ Rushmore: Landry, Staubach, Jones, Emmitt

Nth Queensland Cowboys vs Manly Sea Eagles preview and teams – 2013 NRL Round 18

Roger Staubach: He led the Cowboys to two Super Bowl titles (and four Super Bowl appearances), won a Heisman Trophy and engineered some memorable comebacks. Staubach set the standard by which all quarterbacks of America’s Team are measured. Jerry Jones: Probably the most controversial of our choices, especially if you consider this club’s run of mediocrity since the mid 1990s. But do the Cowboys win three Super Bowls in the 1990s without Jones? He botched the handling of Landry’s firing, but he hired Jimmy Johnson as his replacement and watched the team transform back into a champion. He isn’t on here as a GM. He’s on this monument as an owner. Emmitt Smith : An argument could be made for any of the “Triplets” and maybe even more than one being on this Cowboys Rushmore. But we chose Smith, the NFL’s all-time leading rusher. The Cowboys’ ground game was nearly unstoppable during Smith’s prime and he was an iron man, playing through injuries and leading by example. Others considered (in no particular order): Troy Aikman : Won three Super Bowls and led the club’s productive offense.

Dallas Cowboys Releasing Lawrence Vickers Makes Sense for Team’s New Direction

Lawrence Vickers

Did anybody see the Cowboys play defense in 2012? And it wouldn’t take a comedian to suggest, quite simply, no. Yet there’s four players gaining recognition for rating among the nation’s best. That’s more than one-third of the Cowboys defense. And representing all three levels of the defense, too. Now for a disclaimer: these early watch lists are lengthy and often appear to be all-inclusive. Repeated revisions and cuts are coming before any ballots become relevant. Still, for a team with perceived problems when it comes to limiting yards or points, it’s more reason for increased optimism for a special season in 2013. The offense figures to be potent again, with essentially nine starters back on that side of the ball, plus several exciting new faces hoping to force their way on the field. And you’ll find some Cowboys in play when the watch lists for the Lombardi, Biletnikoff, Davey O’Brien, Doak Walker and Walter Camp awards are revealed this week.

On Friday, the Cowboys released the seven-year pro in a move that will save the team $1.2 million in cap space, which if not used is accredited to next years salary cap. The Cowboys said that they were moving in a different direction on offense and would rely more on two and three tight end sets, ultimately eliminating the need for a true fullback. When the Cowboys went out and signed tight endDante Rosario, the writing was on the wall for Vickers. The Cowboys will also be implementing a zone-run blocking scheme that, in my opinion, suitsDeMarco Murrays running stylebetter. DallasCowboys.com writer and former NFL scout Bryan Broaddusthinks that this new scheme will benefit Murray also. In watching OTA and mini-camp practices,Bill Callahanwas taking plenty of reps to run plays where the offense went without a full back, or when they needed one, it was Rosarioliningup in an offset formation and filling in that role, Broaddus said. It was more single back, zone runs. What I really like about this zone scheme, that Callahan is working with for this offense that it will play to the true strengths of Murray. Broaddusand I both think that Vickers release wont be such a big deal because of the direction in which the team is headed. It simply doesnt need a fullback.

Oklahoma State football: Cowboys defense must get the job done

Remember one thing, Sean Lee. Head on a swivel! Hes easily a top 3 or 5 ILB in the NFL. If he doesnt get hurt last season, hes All-Pro. Injuries happen, its football. But from what weve seen in his time, hes one the best draft picks the cowboys have had in the last 10 years. On that note, if he and Carter can both stay healthy, youre looking at the two new stud LBs in the NFL.

Report: No contract talks for Cowboys, Sean Lee yet

Speaking of convincing fashion Manly, who hadnt won a game since Round 11, handed Parramatta a 50 10 point hiding last Monday night. It was the hit-out Manly needed at this time and allowed Kieran Foran and Brett Stewart, both recently returning from injury the opportunity to play themselves back into form. They miss Watmough and Cherry-Evans to Origin but still name a very strong side. Foran, whose organisational skills was sorely missed in Manlys loss to the Roosters in Round 16, is the driving force in this side and hell create plenty of headaches for the Cowboys wholl struggle to contain Manly. Teams: Nth Queensland Cowboys: Clint Greenshields, Ashley Graham, Antonio Winterstein, Kane Linnett, Kalifa Faifai Loa, Ray Thompson, Robert Lui, Ricky Thorby, Anthony Mitchell, Glenn Hall, Ethan Lowe, Jason Taumalolo, Joel Riethmuller. Interchange: Rory Kostjasyn, Gavin Cooper, Tariq Sims, Scott Bolton, Michael Morgan Manly Sea Eagles: Brett Stewart, Jorge Taufua, Jamie Lyon (c), Steve Matai, David Williams, Kieran Foran, Peta Hiku, Brenton Lawrence, Matt Ballin, Brent Kite, Jamie Buhrer, Justin Horo, Glenn Stewart. Interchange: Richie Faaoso, George Rose, James Hasson, Ligi Sao Unheralded Cowboy relishing NRL chance Hooker Anthony Mitchell says hes relishing the chance of taking on a NRL starting role for North Queensland against Manly on Monday night. In a bid to halt a run of six losses from their past eight matches, Cowboys coach Neil Henry named Mitchell as part of an entirely new forward pack to take on the Sea Eagles. Joining the former Sydney Rooster and Parramatta rake will be Jason Taumalolo, Glenn Hall, Joel Riethmuller, Ethan Lowe and Ricky Thorby as Henry searches for a way to salvage North Queenslands dismal campaign. Its an ominous task for the 24-year-old, especially after Manlys 50-10 hammering of the Eels last time out and with Cowboys stars Johnathan Thurston, Matt Scott, Brent Tate and James Tamou all away on State of Origin duty. But Mitchell believes taking on the best is what first-grade football is all about.
