Anthony Spencer to undergo season-ending surgery
Aiken/Getty Images Anthony Spencer played in just one game for the Cowboys this season, against the Chiefs in Week 2. Woy said Spencer should be 100 percent by January or February. Spencer was placed on injured reserve last week and looked at several surgical options before settling on the microfracture operation that will also use stem cells to promote cartilage growth. In the surgery, tiny holes are drilled into the bone, and blood and bone marrow seal the fractures, creating a super-clot that turns into cartilage over time. Spencer is in the final year of his deal with the Cowboys and is set to be a free agent in March. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he would like Spencer to return to the Cowboys, but the team faces salary-cap issues in 2014. George Selvie has replaced Spencer, who played in only the 17-16 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs ,and has recorded three sacks.
Anthony Spencer inactive for Cowboys
Spencer is inactive for the Cowboys on Sunday, leaving them down a man on the defensive line against the Rams. George Selvie , who started with Spencer out in Week One and split time with Spencer last week, should see the lions share of the time at the position with Spencer out of the lineup. With Spencer now bouncing back to the inactive list, there has to be some concern in Dallas that his knee is going to be an issue well into the season at the very least. Selvie has held up well in his absence, but the team didnt give Spencer the franchise tag for the second straight season so that he could be a rotation player up front for them. Dallas doesnt have a bye until November, so theres not much use in shutting Spencer down until that point. That likely means a lot of game-time decisions for a player the Cowboys were counting on to play a major role up front this season.
Anthony Spencer placed on Dallas Cowboys’ injured reserve
As a http://www.dallascowboyspro.com/55-anthony-spencer-jersey4 result of the soreness in his knee, Spencer was put on the team’s inactive list before the team’s win in Week 3 over the St. Louis Rams . Despite the fact that Dallas is off to a 2-1 start, losing Spencer for the remainder of the season would still be a huge blow. Not only would Dallas be losing an experienced defender with over 90 regular-season appearances under his belt, but it would also be losing one of the franchise’s most productive players. Spencer has 260 solo tackles, 32.5 sacks and 12 forced fumbles for the Cowboys since entering the league in 2007 and is obviously a huge key to Dallas’ pass rush. If there’s good news for Cowboys fans, though, it’s that the team currently ranks second in the NFL in sacks through three weeks with 13 total. Even without Spencer contributing, Dallas has been successful in its attempts to pressure the quarterback.DeMarcus Ware and JasonHatcherhave combined to record seven sacks through three games while two other Cowboys defenders, including Spencer’s backup GeorgeSelvie, have at least two sacks heading into Week 4.
